What do we mean by that? According to Martin Buber, “all real living is meeting.” We cannot make it on our own, but to meet, to connect, to make contact, to be really present with each other in a deeper, nourishing sense is not that easy. It is a skill to be developed and refined.
If we cannot make sense of our experiences, we are lost in a life without meaning. When we assist someone in structuring their experiences, we want them to find their own meaning, not to take on our meaning.
With this kind of self-discovery, things begin to fall into place, and people start to mobilize their inner resources and make progress independently. Our mission as facilitators is then fulfilled and it is time for us to withdraw. Otherwise, what was once helpful and empowering could become an obstacle or unhealthy attachment.
